Today is the anniversary of the massacre at Babi Yar, Ukraine, Sept. 29-30, 1941, in which 33,771 people were slaughtered by Nazis. It was one of the most horrific single massacres ofthe Holocaust. I was reading Yevtushenko and came across his poem commemorating the tragedy.
When you make an eye where an eye should be, and a hand where a hand should be, and a foot where a foot should be, then you will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
Gods! that a thing admired by me
Should taste so much of infamy!
One generation dies and another is born, but the earth goes on forever.
That coursing on, whate'er men's speculations, Amid the changing schools, theologies, philosophies, Amid the bawling presentations new and old, The round earth's silent vital laws, facts, modes continue.
